Frequently asked questions
A Motor Insurance Policy is an agreement or contract between a vehicle owner (Insured), and an insurance company. The Insurance company (Insurer), assumes the risk of any loss that the vehicle owner or driver may incur, through damage to property or persons as a result of an accident. In certain cases, the insurer may extend coverage to include repairs to your vehicle as well, among other benefits.
A Motor Policy Schedule is the formal written contract agreement between you the vehicle owner, and the Insurer. This document provides details on what the insurance company will pay for and what they will not pay for, following an accident, along with other details of your coverage like Deductibles (where applicable).
Trinidad and Tobago laws require every car to have a valid printed Motor Insurance Certificate as evidence of insurance coverage. This Motor Insurance Certificate is issued by the Insurer and is to be kept in your vehicle at all times. One of the most frequently asked questions is if you can discard the expired certificate at the end of the policy year and the answer is yes! No need to have 10 years certificates in your glove box, only the one for the current insurance period.
At Nautica, we transmit your electronic Motor Insurance Certificate to you as an added layer ofredundancy and deliver the original to your doorstep through our partners at TT Post.
Each premium is calculated by Nautica platform independently. A policy is based on a lot of factors, including the vehicle’s Make, Model, Value, Age, Usage, as well as the driver’s Claims History, Experience, Age and so on. At Nautica we offer many policy options from our nation’s top insurers to fit your budget.
This motor premium has to be paid in advance of the issuance of the motor coverage, unless otherwise agreed.
Insurance Companies charge more for persons just getting their license as they will be inexperienced on our nation’s roads. The general rule is that for any persons under 25 years of age and or those that have less than 2 years driving experience, Insurers charge an additional premium to add that driver to the policy. The extra premium – called a young driver loading, can range from 10% to 100% or more depending on the age and experience of the young driver.
At Nautica we find the best policy to suit your needs. Note that you can add your loved ones to your motor policy at any time during the life of your policy!
Yes, you can amend your policy at any time. You may amend your cover during the quotation phase or after binding cover.
If you wish to make a change after the policy has been issued E.g., add a young driver, add another vehicle, you can contact us and we will happily assist you. Before the change, we will let you know the premium cost so you can make the final decision.
Insurers usually reward customers who have not claimed at the end of their policy term with a discount towards the following year’s insurance coverage. This is generally referred to as a “No Claims Discount” or “Safe Driving Discount”, and is expressed in years, “1st Year” or “3rd Year”, up to a maximum of 5 years. It may also be expressed as a percentage.
Yes, you can. All we ask is that you provide some proof of the No claims Discount. This may take the form of a No Claims Discount letter issued by your previous insurer, a renewal notice or we may with your permission, contact your previous insurer directly to confirm your claims history. Nautica makes providing proof of NCD a simple process.
After transferring the vehicle, you must secure the Certificate of Insurance from the vehicle and contact us. We will note the date of your request, but the Certificate of Insurance must be returned before the policy can be cancelled. If the Certificate cannot be provided for any reason, an affidavit must be sworn that the Certificate has been misplaced, and this affidavit provided to us.
Your No Claims Discount is applied to only one vehicle at a time. If you've sold your current vehicle and have a new one, you can apply the same NCD as previously earned. Note that generally, if you still have your current vehicle and have purchased a new vehicle, the NCD will apply to only one of those vehicles, not both.
An NCD can be applied to any vehicle you own, within 18 months of your previous policy.
You should always insure your car for the current market value at the time of effecting the coverage. This is the most common question asked of us, and, the most important, as in the event of a loss, the insurance company will pay to the Policyholder the Sum Insured at the time of the loss. Note that your vehicle depreciates even during a policy period (unless otherwise stated), meaning sum you receive may be lower than your sum insured.
The Sum Insured is,
- not the residual loan value;
- not the Original Purchase price of the car; and
- not your depreciated price in your records.
If you are unsure of the value of your vehicle, you must have a valuation performed (cost is approximated $250.00 and takes 10-15 minutes), from any one of the following:
